Where Everyone’s Definition Of “Holy” Has A Place

December 7, 2015

ticketimageIn less than two weeks (4:30 pm, Saturday, December 19, 2015), we’ll sing Harmony and Light: A Jazz-Inspired Christmas.

In artistic director, Jennifer Rodgers’ own words:

This concert was inspired by those experiences when the sound and the sense in the room are bigger than the room itself. Where the warmth or the silence, the importance or the sacredness of the moment seem to push outward on the brick and the wood. Where everyone’s definition of “holy” has a place, and we feel both bound together and full of our own hopes and thoughts.

It’s going to be a great show, with a jazz combo (piano, sax, guitar, and drums), and some lovely pieces by Ola Gjeilo, Darmon Meader, and more. Again, in Rodgers’ words, “a combination of unexpected, ear-bending and heart-warming harmonies to describe the Christmas season.”

Tickets are available — get them now and you won’t have to wait in line on show night!

Seth Hurwitz’s Right, You Should See Us Live

December 9, 2014

kidatcelticfestYou probably looked at that title and thought “Who is Seth Hurwitz?”

Short answer – owner of the 9:30 Club in DC. Longer answer – the guy who also owns Merriweather Post Pavillion and the restored Lincoln Theater, and one of the few contenders who can go up against Live Nation/Ticketmaster.

No, Hurwitz doesn’t know us. ::sad face:: But he recently said something that really resonates with us at VCS.

Washingtonian magazine asked him why the public should bother going to shows if they can get it all online, anytime they want. Here’s how he replied:

That’s not a concert—that’s a video. A live concert … is a fantastic social experience. You’re in a room, sharing it with people—the crowd noise, the applause. Most people are at a screen all day. We sell escapism. When you go into that room, everything else goes away.

Hurwitz is absolutely right. [Read more…]

Come See Us At Meadowlark Tonight!

December 10, 2013

95-atxlSo, late notice, but hey – blame the weather! We will be singing at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens’ “Winter Walk Of Lights,” tonight, December 10, 2013 from 7:15 – 8 pm. We’ll sing it their wonderful Atrium, and we’d love to see you there if you happen by.

Two things to note:

1) This is a ticketed event, part of the Winter Walk Of Lights, and you can find out information here, on their website.

2) We are not singing our entire Solstice repertoire. So if you miss us tonight, you still have plenty of time to come see us in a couple of weeks. We’ll sing “Solstice: Light And Dark,” 4:30 pm, Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Vienna Baptist Church. Tickets are on sale, and if you buy them now, you can skip the lines at the door.

See you soon!

Concert And Holiday Month!

December 2, 2013

We have so much happening this month we decided to just keep it simple and list it all. Boring, but effective! So, here goes:

95-atxlMonday, December 2, 2013 – Church Street Stroll
Join us for this fun, casual, outdoor event in downtown Vienna. Merchants light up their stores, kids can meet Santa, grown-ups can enjoy the season. And you can hear us – or maybe even sing with us! We sing at 7 pm, starting at Lawyers and Church, and carol our way north to Caffe Amouri. Don’t be surprised if we show up in period holiday gear. It’s been known to happen!

VCS And #GivingTuesday 2013

November 15, 2013

We are six weeks away from our winter concert. But more importantly, we are less than two weeks away from holiday season, and the traditional season of giving. And although we love our audience, and have one of the most amazing, dedicated, and fun choirs in town, the fact is we’re a non-profit. As we shared with our audience earlier this week:

man singing with mouth open in car with dog

Yep. We look like that en route to rehearsal. via A Life (More Awesome)

We sing for three reasons. It makes us happy, it’s a good thing to do in the world (and our community), and we sing for you.

When you come out to see our ambitious, unique, traditional-with-a-twist artistic choices and make us bring out the overflow seating, you have no idea how awesome it feels up on those risers. Your warmth and applause makes it all worth it: the weekly time commitment; the weeks of note-pounding; the looking really weird on 495, mouths hanging wide open to practice that one crazy note … [Read more…]

A New Year, Meadowlark, And Open Rehearsals

December 28, 2012

Thank you all so much for braving the winds and coming to see us last weekend. It was great to usher in the holiday with you at Welcome Yule!

If you loved the music, and would like to order CDs, CD orders, fill out the information sheet and send it with your payment to the aptly named Mr. Bandman. We can attest that his turnaround is speedy fast. He can take orders starting January 2, 2013.

And if you’d like to see great photos of us, we’ve a few more at the end of this post, but there are more up on our Pinterest page as well as on Mr. King’s own website. Have a look! And yes, he does sell prints. You’ll have to email him directly for that.
