One Last Time!

May 15, 2015

heroesIn a few hours the choir will meet for one final dress rehearsal, and tomorrow at this time we’ll be getting ready for the last concert of the season.

And what an amazing season it’s been!

We’ve had some great music in 2014-15: From the multimedia Road Trip in the fall; to the packed and joyous house of Nowel e Navidad with the Vienna Jammers and Bridges Harmony; and the deeply moving experience of Text And Sound, complete with our newly launched VCS Ensemble Choir….it’s been a season of big creative strides. Help us sing it out one last time.

Join us tomorrow as we honor the everyday heroes in our community — the first responders, those with and without uniforms, the people who were just doing their jobs or “the right thing.”

We sing Someone To Watch Over Me: Everyday Heroes – tomorrow, 4:30 pm, Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Vienna Baptist Church – in partnership with the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department, the Vienna Police Department, and the 2015 World Police and Fire Games.

As always, you are invited to stay for a post-concert reception catered by Whole Foods-Vienna.

Tickets will be available online at https://vcs-heroes.eventbrite.com until 11 pmtonight. The box office will open tomorrow at 4 pm.

See you tomorrow evening!

Getting To Know You: The 2015 Games

May 14, 2015

And finally this concert week, we get to know a bit about the 2015 World Police and Fire Games. You’ve probably started to see ads and billboards for the games — which are huge! The 2015 Games  will feature 12,000 first responders from 70 countries competing in 61 sports over 10 days in 53 venues throughout Fairfax County and the National Capital Region. The Games are the largest multi-sport event in the world for public safety officials. Most events will take place in Fairfax County and will be free to attend.

Getting To Know You: The Vienna Police Department

May 13, 2015

vpdcoinfront-crop-transIt’s concert week! And we love getting to know our partners and introducing them to you before show night.  The last post was on the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department. Up next, the Vienna Police Department, where we talked to Public Information Officer MPO Gary Lose and Lieutenant Thomas Taylor.

We expected maybe twenty businesslike minutes. Instead, to our pleasant surprise, they were very generous with their time and talked to us for two hours! But we shouldn’t be surprised, as you’ll see from their answers. (Note: We talked to them separately, but we posed the same questions, and got interesting answers!) Read on:

VCS: What do you want the community to know about you?
MPO Gary Lose:
That we’re accessible. Don’t worry that you’re wasting our time, we’d rather you call us even if it turns out to be nothing. [Read more…]

Getting To Know You: The VVFD, Fire Station 402

May 12, 2015

If you’ve followed our blog, you know that concert week has usually come to mean getting to know our partners, or sometimes, a funny post about dress rehearsal (when nerves and hilarity are at an all time combined high). We’ll have the funnies later, but first up this week as we approach Everyday Heroes, the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department, one of our two local partners in this concert for a cause to support the everyday heroes in our community. (The other local partner is the Vienna Police Department, we’ll have more on them later this week.)

Did you know that of all the fire departments in Fairfax County, the VVFD is one of four that is self-funded? And that a major source of income is the bingo games the VVFD hosts? That’s right, their ability to respond to your 911 calls or pay off the newly purchased apparatus is funded by revenue that they have to work hard to earn (as opposed to having it earmarked clearly and more effortlessly through government funding). And they’re all volunteers.

Humbling, isn’t it?

Read on to learn more about the people at VVFD, Fire Station 402.

When The Concert Intersects With Real Life

We plan out our seasons well in advance. When Everyday Heroes was envisioned, well over 18 months ago, the idea was to convey, in song, that moment we see time and again—that moment when we are are all capable of being extraordinary. When we are surprised and transformed by what we, or someone else we may never have pegged as the hero of the moment end up doing because there was no other choice. It’s our “Clark Kent ripping off the glasses” moment. Only, without a cape.

And when we think of the 90 minutes you’re going to spend with us, we want to offer something unique that stays with you—whether it’s a happy earworm or an outlet for which words simply aren’t enough. We think of something lasting, not current events.

In other words, no one at VCS had any idea that this season’s concert for a cause might be “timely.” Indeed, we seem to have stumbled upon world events, even as we didn’t look to find them in our repertoire. Because in the last two weeks we have seen: [Read more…]

Counting Down To The 2014-15 Season

August 12, 2014

14-15_SeasonTwo weeks to kicking off a great season and we are BURSTING with news.

As you know, we hold one concert for a cause every season. In the past we’ve sung to highlight science education, food insecurity, and mental health awareness.

This season our concert for a cause is going to be Someone To Watch Over Me: Everyday Heroes, in support of people who step up and put their lives on the line for the rest of us. Some in uniform, many not, every single day, very often unsung.

Fittingly, VCS will highlight and partner with three major organizations for this concert.

We’re delighted to inform you that two of our partners will be none other than Vienna’s finest – the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department and the Vienna Police Department.

Our third partner will be the 2015 World Police & Fire Games, which will feature 12,000 first responders from 70 countries competing in 61 sports over 10 days in 53 venues throughout Fairfax County and the National Capital Region. The Games are the largest multi-sport event in the world for public safety officials. Most events will take place in Fairfax County and will be free to attend.

Do you have our dates in your calendar yet? You can get them all on our website calendar.

Coming up right away is our Summer Vocal Workshop. We still have tickets left, and welcome all voices and skill levels. Don’t wait too long to book Masterclass spots though, those are going fast.
