The choices for this concert — IT’S A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING, 7:30 pm, Saturday, May 20 2017 at Vienna Baptist Church — were infinite, especially for a guy like me who loves Broadway. I finally chose this special repertoire because it appeals to audiences of all ages. Still, every repertoire is a discovery. And it has been interesting to revisit some old pieces and juxtapose them with newer ones that have recently dominated the charts. The styles have changed, but the emotions are the same. How they make us feel across the generations is remarkably similar.
Some pieces are universally cherished in the same way because we all discovered them in the same setting—at the movies, with grandparents, over a big bowl of popcorn during a holiday weekend movie marathon. Some of us chuckled at hearing, “Wait, isn’t that from the Gap commercial/sung by Barbra Streisand with Melissa McCarthy as comic relief?” (Uh, no.)
And some pieces are now part of our shared cultural idiom, happily identifiable anywhere within the first two bars.
There is something for everyone to love, and plenty for our partners at the Louise Archer Elementary School choir to join in singing with us.
We’ve loved rehearsals. We hope you’ll love the show. Please join us!
