We’ve long wanted to do a concert that highlights women composers, and our Artistic Director has actually found it’s difficult to narrow them down, there are so many delightful contemporary choices among the masterworks available. And that is what you have to look forward to in our next concert.
Some are established names like Gwyneth Walker whose arrangement of “How Can I Keep From Singing” is both stirring and joyful. Another is Ysaye Barnwell, whose “Wanting Memories” is a place of instant rest. And there are the others – like Elaine Hagenberg, Rosephanye Powell, and Andrea Ramsey – who are still rising and just gaining the recognition they deserve. These are the composers who will influence the next generation of students, musicians, and audiences. And they bring a fresh, often joyful, always unique approach to age-old themes of love and longing.
More than anything, the music also has unmistakable timelessness. In fact, more than one singer has commented that some of the music and words we are singing are as relevant today as they were when first premiered. Paired with lyrics and poetry – including that of the first female winner of what is now the Pulitzer Prize for poetry – this is going to be a wonderful, “ear opening” evening of discovering music anew, and hearing new music altogether.
We’re also looking forward to sharing the stage – as we always do. And in keeping with the theme of the evening, we’re delighted to have a women’s barbershop group, the UP ALL NIGHT QUARTET, as our special musical guests.
We can’t wait to sing with them, and sing for you.
