Another season has ended, and I am beyond proud of everything we’ve done this year. In spite of a freak snow in October (the only bit of winter we saw all year!), we filled the house for Music From the Big Screen. Our Christmas Stories concert, with dancing sugarplums and dancing children, proved that our audience doesn’t just come for the cocoa, and the Celtic Arts Festival brought together an entire community to share music, culture and food. And last night’s Seikilos to U2 concert? A triumph – just a joy to sing such diverse music for such an appreciative crowd.
In addition to four great concerts, Vienna Choral Society had some other things to look back on with pride. Caroling during Historic Vienna’s Holiday Stroll, performing at the Mayor’s Reception, singing at local nursing homes. Our choir is as large as it’s been in years, and our audiences have broken box office records.
There are too many to thank for everything that happened this year, but it would be so rude not to try. So here goes. . . .
To Jennifer Rodgers Beach – for bringing out the best in us with charm, professional mastery, and confidence in our abilities.
To Mark Vogel – for his gorgeous piano accompaniment, humor and skill as a back-up rehearsal leader. You seldom get the praise you deserve, but know that we notice. And appreciate.
To the VCS Board – for demonstrating their commitment to this group by taking on the leadership roles necessary to keep a mostly-volunteer organization going.
To Sohini Baliga, Lisa Robinson and all the other volunteers – who are the needle that pulls the thread. Truly, we’d fall apart at the seams if it weren’t for you.
To the Arts Council of Fairfax County and the Rotary Club of Vienna, as well as the wonderful people who care enough about us to donate – for all your support. We hope we’ve made your proud.
To our audiences – the main reason why we sing. Well, most of us sing for the joy of it, but part of that joy is sharing the music with someone else.
To our new members – for bringing fresh energy and enthusiasm to the group.
To our returning members – for their enthusiasm and commitment, and to allowing us to be in the company of friends on Tuesday evenings.
And it is to the company of friends I look forward to returning at the end of August. I hope to meet new friends, too. Have a safe and wonderful summer, all of you. Sing whenever you can until we see each other again!
