We’re counting down to the show this week in our concert venue – we sing THERE’S ALWAYS PLAN B, Saturday, May 18, 7:30 pm, at Providence Presbyterian Church (9019 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax, VA 22031). We will be joined by the amazing singers from Louise Archer Elementary School Chorus (dirs. Sean Cator and Mary Frances Dini).
Tickets are available online until 11:55 pm, Friday, May 17, 2019.
After that you can get them at the door starting 6:30 pm.
As always, it’s a revelation to hear a nearly show-ready run through in a resonant room with great acoustics. All those stops and starts, the endless directions to breathe here and wait there, a whole season of singing as one voice – it all comes together beautifully. And the music reminds you again just why it is amazing, and still relevant.
We’re singing a repertoire that ranges from the 16th to the late 20th century. And yet, nothing feels out of place. If anything, it’s nice to be reminded of why pieces of music from Bach’s Minuet in G to The Beatles’ In My Life reach critical mass, get played out, and then return, fully baked into our every day pop-culture DNA.
It’s the simple yet complex counterpoint of Bach’s beautiful melodies the never cease to make you stop and listen. Or the simple words arranged atop Beethoven’s inventive scores that make you reconsider what you’ve seen and recited and glossed over a thousand times before. Bernstein, meanwhile, still reintroduces the age-old tale of star-crossed lovers over and over to audiences worldwide – before there was Hamilton, there was West Side Story, because it is universal to hope that a better place waits for us Somewhere.
This is music we love, at first blush, for it’s own sake, and for the sheer fun of it. And we’re going to so enjoy singing it along side the fabulous kids from Louise Archer Elementary School.
