Dan Forrest’s choral masterwork Requiem For The Living, which inspired our next concert with its magnificent music and uplifting message is truly unique, and departs in many ways from the traditional requiem.
In the composer’s own words, it starts simply and builds on long, floating melodic lines, ultimately moving towards an exhilarating closing section that portrays light, peace, and rest.
One of the loveliest lines of the concert—“But joy comes in the morning light”— isn’t in the requiem. Instead, as our artistic director Mike Horanski explains, you will hear music about life’s total journey. Of all its hopes and dreams and adventures. Because music helps us express emotions in ways that words and individuals may not be able to, building community when we help each other celebrate life’s joys and giving comfort to one another.
Indeed, this concert has been a joy to rehearse. Our singers have fought traffic, doubled down on individual practice, and have enjoyed shaping every note. In particular, we are thrilled to once again feature Melvin Goodwyn, our own Accompanist, on VBC’s wonderfully restored organ.
Last but not least, this event is our 2016-17 season’s Concert for a Cause. Every season, we widen our circle by shining a light on organizations, giving their causes a platform and celebrating them with music.
This season, we are delighted to partner with BLUME-Haiti, an international organization that works to develop leadership skills, awaken individual potential, and create opportunities in Haiti through the pursuit of musical excellence. It is only fitting that our guest musicians — on flute, horn, oboe, harp, violin, cello, percussion, and one of the soloists — are all dedicated professionals who serve children each day in our public schools as music educators.
It is going to be a wonderful evening. Please join us!
