Our artistic director, Mike Horanski has often said, “You can’t sing together and be at odds with each other at the same time.” You’ll see that sentiment reflected in the repertoire and name of our next concert – we sing In All Voices, Jubilate Deo! 7:30 pm, March 10, 2018 at Vienna Baptist Church (541 Marshall Rd. SW, Vienna, VA 22180).
From Jim Papoulis’ Omnes Credere in aliquid (Latin for “everyone believes in something”) to Dan Forrest’s Jubilate Deo! which celebrates and discovers the same piece of Biblical text in several musical traditions, In All Voices reminds us of something we always seem to risk forgetting: There is so much more that brings us together than would drive us apart.
Music is possibly one of the easiest and most accessible ways to find ourselves in the other. Everyone understands the rise and fall of melody. Even the most untutored ear can find a beat. There isn’t a culture in human history that hasn’t sung its joys, sorrows, victories, and defeats. The right notes express joy when words aren’t enough, or grief, when they aren’t welcome. In Elizabeth Bishop’s words, which we will sing in I Am In Need Of Music: “There is a magic made by melody: A spell of rest, and quiet breath, and cool.”
Music is the “pause button” that has always given us options in real time. Sometimes, we get lucky with repertoire that expands our options. In his new opus, Jubilate Deo! Forrest – whose Requiem For The Living we sang last year – reminds us that everyone is welcome to sing the music as they would. That when every voice, verse, and vocabulary is welcome, we enter something bigger, more transcendent than just the music.
This is where singers are twice blessed. Studies show that in choirs, everyone singing breathes together. Not just because the score demands it, but because they just do. It’s a moment of community like little else in an otherwise noisy world. Already, in rehearsal, we have had those moments. As one of our singers put it, “This music is precious, it gives me wings. I leave floating.”
We can only imagine what the concert will be like, when we know every note, and are accompanied by a professional orchestra the music deserves.
Come. Listen. And transcend with us.
