  • October 19, 2019
  • December 14, 2019
  • March 14, 2020
  • and May 16, 2020

All our concerts will be at Providence Presbyterian Church (9019 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax, VA), and begin at 7:30 pm. Yes, we do have season tickets! Join our mailing list – it’ll take 30 seconds and you’ll get your tickets before everyone else!

Here’s to more amazing music!

Our First Top Ten List With Mike Horanski

October 19, 2016

oct2016tixWe’re less than a week to our first concert with Mike Horanski – The Call Of Music. The excitement is ratcheting up, and we all file in to rehearsals for our the first show week with Mike!

Of course things worthy of a now traditional VCS Top Ten list happened. Or rather, were said. Because if there is one thing we now look forward to, it’s the Mike-isms, often movie-related.

Here is a top ten: [Read more…]

Calling Tenors and Basses

August 24, 2015

Tomorrow at this time we’ll be getting ready to kick off our 28th season! And what a season it promises to be. But before we remind you of what we plan to sing this season….

A call for Tenors and Basses!

We have carved out a place in Northern Virginia as an excellent, non-audition choir with creative, diverse programming. We accept singers of all level of musical experience, offer a teaching rehearsal environment and still set a high bar for musical quality. Our current tenor and bass sections are “small but mighty” – producing good sound and enjoying great camaraderie. We are actively focusing our growth on these sections as we reach new levels of excellence and wish to keep that momentum going!

Interested? Drop us an email at info@viennachoralsociety.org. You won’t regret it!

And now for our season poster if you haven’t already seen it:

Q&A with Dave Reynolds of the Vienna Jammers

December 17, 2014

And today, we hear from the one and only Dave Reynolds of the Vienna Jammers Percussion Ensemble – he who has been known to shave his head and festoon it with a green shamrock on St. Patrick’s Day. He came to rehearsal last night sporting a full head of his normal colored hair, accompanied by one Jammer, two congas, and oh yeah, a steel drum. So before we hear from him, here are five things that happened at rehearsal:

    • Dave and his Jammer, Annalise, don’t just sway, they full out shimmy to the music. While playing.
    • There’s a long 7 minute back and forth between him, Greg, and Jen about the music, the fact that the music is wrong, the exact nanosecond during which someone beats something and …. “Hey, this is important technical stuff!”…
    • When the choir starts to laugh at that bit, Dave says something to the effect of “Okay fine, we’ll use formal terminology.” Which is how the words “Molto craziando” enter the VCS lexicon.
    • Jen says, “I need you to be/sound more sunbathed!” We know exactly what she means, and we sound sunnier, to her satisfaction. Even though it’s Virginia, in mid-December. We’re awesome like that.
    • Dave can set up and dismantle equipment awfully fast. Turn around, and everyone’s gone. No joke.

We did get Dave to answer a few questions, and here is what he had to say about drumming and the Jammers.
VCS: I say drums, you say …
DR: Heartbeat.

VCS: A bunch of kids, things to bang on, this is going to end in ….
DR: A joyous noise!

VCS: All drummers are this old in their heads:
DR: 5

VCS: The easiest thing to learn at Jammers is…
DR: The “Stop Immediately” speech!

VCS: The hardest thing to play on a drum is…
DR: A steady tempo

Dave Reynolds of the Vienna Jammers at rehearsal with VCS – December 16, 2014

VCS: The best three drummers are …
DR: Always disciplined.

VCS: Your favorite drum solo is ….
DR: One played with others!

VCS: Your kids would be thrilled to do this piece….
DR: Animals!

VCS: Your kids would think you’ve lost your marbles if you asked them to…
DR: Play a new piece live after only rehearsing it once!

VCS: You are looking forward to doing this with VCS and Bridges Harmony because …
DR: Joint concerts are fun!
We still have tickets available for Nowel e Navidad. Tickets are $25 for adults, and $20 for seniors(65+) and students(15-18). Youth (14 and younger) attend for free with a paying adult. TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE NOW. You can also purchase them directly through a member of the choir. Nowel e Navidad Guest Artists: Q&A with Bonny Tynch of Bridges

December 15, 2014

It’s that time! Time to find out about the people behind one of our two guests for Nowel e Navidad.

The Bridges Choir is an El Sistema-inspired, intensive after school program that is immersing our young people in music, community and culture. Located out of Cunningham Park Elementary School in Vienna, Bridges is led by Bonny Tynch.

In addition to leading the Bridges Choir, Ms. Tynch is a music educator in the Fairfax County Public School system as well as the Youth Chorus Conductor at the Fairfax Choral Society. In other words, she deals with kids and music *a lot.* We asked her what she thinks will happen on show night before the Bridges Choir joins us on stage.

VCS: We say harmony, you say……?
BT: BRIDGES!

VCS: Finish the math –  25 kids + a live show + first weekend of winter break = ?
BT: Indication of dedication

VCS: You really have the patience of a saint. True, False, or Hilarious?
BT: True.

VCS: The best part of working with kids is ……
BT: Empowering them to exceed expectations.

VCS: What you tell the kids before you take the stage:
BT: You’ve worked hard. Be proud and share your music!

VCS: What the kids tell you or share after you take the stage ….
BT: “That was fun! I was so nervous before we started.”

VCS: The kids would love to sing/perform….
BT: At a sporting event.

VCS: The first thing you’ll do after the show ends?
BT: HIGH FIVE and receive hugs from proud family members!

VCS: You are looking forward to making music with VCS and the Jammers because….
BT: What better way to bring different people together – through music!

Coming up next, a Q&A with David Reynolds of the Vienna Jammers, who will also be our guests this weekend.

It’s going to be a great show! Do you have tickets yet? Tickets are $25 for adults, and $20 for seniors(65+) and students(15-18). Counting Down To The 2014-15 Season

August 12, 2014

14-15_SeasonTwo weeks to kicking off a great season and we are BURSTING with news.

As you know, we hold one concert for a cause every season. In the past we’ve sung to highlight science education, food insecurity, and mental health awareness.

This season our concert for a cause is going to be Someone To Watch Over Me: Everyday Heroes, in support of people who step up and put their lives on the line for the rest of us. Some in uniform, many not, every single day, very often unsung.

Fittingly, VCS will highlight and partner with three major organizations for this concert.

We’re delighted to inform you that two of our partners will be none other than Vienna’s finest – the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department and the Vienna Police Department.

Our third partner will be the 2015 World Police & Fire Games, which will feature 12,000 first responders from 70 countries competing in 61 sports over 10 days in 53 venues throughout Fairfax County and the National Capital Region. The Games are the largest multi-sport event in the world for public safety officials. Most events will take place in Fairfax County and will be free to attend.

Do you have our dates in your calendar yet? You can get them all on our website calendar.

Coming up right away is our Summer Vocal Workshop. We still have tickets left, and welcome all voices and skill levels. Don’t wait too long to book Masterclass spots though, those are going fast.

Snow Day, PJ day….hey, there’s a thought….

January 21, 2014

And today, VCS declared pj day and cancelled rehearsal.  It was the sensible thing to do in this weather, no? Come to think of it, it’s very much in keeping with the spirit of our next concert: We’re singing Lullabies (4:30 pm, Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Vienna Baptist Church) in our pajamas.

That’s right, we’re ditching our formal attire for this performance. We thought about it. And realized that while we’d look …..silly, we’d take that over looking positively ridiculous, singing in bowtie and formal clothes – at a family-friendly concert, where many of our audience members may well be either just done with naptime or heading towards bed time.
